The bronze statue was funded by Carl Jacobsen, the founder of the New Carlsberg Beer Company. One day, after watching the premiere of the ballet "Daughter of the Sea" at the Theatre Royal, Karl Jacobson was deeply moved and came up with the idea of making a bronze statue for a mermaid. He felt that Andersen's fairy tales had forms of ballet, music and oil painting in art. Only one statue is missing. So Karl Jacobsen discussed with the sculptor Eriksson, hoping that Ericsson would use the art of carving to represent the mermaid. Jacobson also invited Ericson to watch the ballet "Daughter of the Sea". Ericson got inspiration from the ballet and conceived the shape of the bronze statue.

The bronze statue of the mermaid has been inaugurated in Changdi Park in 1913 and has a history of nearly 104 years. She attracts countless tourists. There is a saying: If you don’t see the mermaid, you don’t count as having been to Copenhagen. The bronze mermaid statue has become a symbol of Copenhagen. However, the mermaid suffered three times in 1964, 1984, and 1998 by being "beheaded" and "broken". Among them, the mermaid's head was again "cut" on January 6, 1998, and was recovered shortly after.
